These beautiful, fragile flowers come from the Near East and the Mediterranean, and were first brought to Britain at the end of the sixteenth century. Their name comes from the Greek anemos, meaning ‘the wind’, because their delicate flowers appear to open in a gentle breeze, but are also so short lived, like a breath of wind.
